Invicta (oz9906)
About this Plan
Invicta. Rubber sport cabin model. Redrawn by Terry King, Impington Model Club, August 2001.
Quote: "An unpublished 20in span F/F gem from 1963, by Ray Malmstrom.
Ray established the Impington Village College M.A.C. in 1945 and is still club president in 2001. Throughout that time he has been a prolific designer of models of character and charm. Invicta fits that description and, like all of his designs, it also flies extremely well. The total number of models that Ray has designed is unknown but the Impington club is trying to track all of them down and so far knows of over 180. Ray has kept no records, so the search is an interesting one! Ray designed Invicta for a club 'one model' competition in 1963 - hence the IVC in InV'Cta! The original drawing was for immediate consumption by club members and was not prepared for publication.
Terry King, a long time club member and former pupil of Ray's at the College, has redrawn the plan as presented here from an original copy found in a member's archives. The original included many notes and sketches in the style that will be familiar to those who knew Ray's plans in Aerornodeller and Model Aircraft in the '60s. For clarity Terry has avoided placing all of these notes on the plan featured here (which has been changed from 3 sheets of A4 to one of A3). Additional points that should be noted are:
Propeller: A 7.1/4" x 1.1/4" (width) x 3/4" prop. block is shown on the original plan with the suggestion that a 7.1/4" K.K. plastic prop. may be used instead. A good choice today would be the 7.3/4" Peck Polymers plastic prop. from SAMS or Flitehook.
Finish and Covering: The original instructions, shown on the redraw as well, were to finish the sheet parts with clear dope and tissue cover the wing only. The model in the photos is finished that way. An alternative is to tissue cover all parts. The sheet surfaces should be treated with clear dope first (two thin coats) and then the tissue can be fixed by 'flooding through' with thinners. It may be advisable to pin or weigh down flat as the sheet surfaces dry. This gives a more durable finish than doped sheet, the weight can be saved by using lighter wood and, of course, you can play with pretty colour schemes.
Wing Fixing: The original plan calls for cementing the wing permanently in place. We have shown dowel and band fixing on the redraw. The choice is yours..."

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
