About this Plan

Nesmith Cougar. Rubber powered scale model.

Quote: "There is a great deal of satisfaction and pleasure in building and flying a rubber powered scale model. The sight of a well-trimmed rubber scale model slowly, steadily and silently climbing then settling down to a graceful glide, is seldom seen these days and regrettably is forgotten. Cougar presented here, when flown at a typical powered flying session, brings comment such as, "I haven't seen a model like that in years" from the older flyers or "Gee, you mean it flies like that on only rubber bands," from the younger builders.

It is ideally suited for rubber powered modeling purposes and has a landing gear that will clear a propellor of about 1/3 the wingspan. The fuselage, though appearing bulky, is really ideal in that it is long and very light to build. Overall configuration is stable enough that only slight increases in dihedral and stabilizer area are required for very stable performance. Further, the structure of the real plane is such that it can be efficiently duplicated in rubber model form.

Full scale Cougar is a home built, high performance, two-place, light plane. To simplify home building, it uses many components from popular light planes and as a result, a significant number of Cougars have been or are being built. It has a fop speed of 182 mph and cruises at 166 mph on a 115 hp engine. To achieve these high speeds on so little horsepower the plane is quite small, having a wing span of only 20.5 feet. This smallness accounts for the relatively large fuselage and contributes to the Cougar's suitability for a rubber powered modeling subject.

Very nice plan and well worth building. Many cougars have different engine cowlings and it would be nice if someone designed variants. I might have a go myself

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
