HV-450 (oz9738)
About this Plan
H.V. 450. Free flight power model. For petrol engines from 7 to 10cc, can also be diesel powered, the version shown in the photographs employs a 5cc Micron.
Quote: "PROBABLY the greatest surprise delivered to we staid British aeromods last season was the astonishing performance of the continental power models during International Week, in particular those of the French. The rocketing corkscrew climbs of their models were a revelation to us all. Once we had recovered from the shock of their phenomenal performance it became apparent that this was obtained in most cases at the expense of appearance. Bare motors perched so that the prop blades cleared a cranked pylon wing by as little as a quarter of an inch in some cases were hardly easy on the eyes (particularly British eyes).
There were, however, one or two notable exceptions, Henri Varache's H.V.450 being one of them. When a model of pleasing semi-scale lines competes most successfully with freak contest models then the designer has definitely got something! We thought so, anyway, hence this design for the benefit of readers. The sight of M, Varache's 6 foot span model screaming above our heads in tight circles was disturbing at first, but its spiral stability was obviously beyond doubt, and there was never a trace or suggestion of spinning tendencies as the machine climbed rapidly skywards at 70 degrees.
A word here on the designer, who is one of France's leading power modellers. He has designed and built over 500 models to date and in this instance, used the full measure of his experience to produce a model the development of which has been on the most searching lines. In point of fact, over 50 prototypes were successfully flown by his fellow clubmen before the plans were made available. Not only is the machine rapidly assembled, but the parts are completely 'knockoffable' in the case of hard landings and crashes..."

User comments
Hi Steve, For some reason, the comment link isn't working on my screen, for your HV450 page, and I have (what I think is) an interesting comment! The description text, from Aeromodeller starts by stating that the original model (shown in the photo) was powered by a Micron 5cc diesel... which isn't true. The article was written by Dicky (DJ Laidlaw) Dickson, whom I knew. He lived close to me. Seeing the photo, dear old Dicky saw a fixed compression diesel, and the only one he knew was the Micron, so it had to be that... and that's what he wrote. However, studying the photos, it's obvious that the engine shown isn't the Micron, but an Airplan Normandie 5.5cc, and this is confirmed by descriptions of the same plane in contemporary French magazines (MRA). I pointed this out to Dicky and Ron Moulton sometime during the seventies. However, while they agreed with me, the article had already been published for 25 years, so it could never be corrected, except when an occasion arises... Like now! * Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
