About this Plan

Protean. Versatile 98in span soarer, with solid balsa wing.

Quote: "DESIGNED with good looks and exciting performance in mind, Protean is a logical development of my previous solid wing soarer Poltergeist (oz9514). My requirements were for a larger model than Poltergeist, comparable to 100S soarers but having a higher speed and a semi-aerobatic performance.

Protean employs a solid sparless balsa wing of 98 inch span (a now proven construction system) which is built in two parts for easier storage and transportation. Although high aspect ratio soarers such as this usually require rudder control in addition to ailerons due to the adverse yaw tendencies, Protean can execute good turns without tip stalling or dragging the top wing on just ailerons and elevators. Good marginal lift performance is achieved by using a relatively thin (10%) flat bottomed wing section and a long tail movement gives a fair degree of inherent longtitudinal stability in turbulent conditions.

Construction. The May 1979 issue of Radio Modeller contains a detailed description on carving wings from solid sheet..."

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
