About this Plan

Lightning Rod. Free flight power model. High thrustline design. Oliver Tiger 2.5cc (15 cu in) engine shown.

Quote: "Looking for that high Performance job that will perform consistently under all conditions? If you are, don't look any further than this Class A free fighter.

The Lightning Rod was developed after the 1958 Nats when I saw the need for a consistent, stable model that would handle well in the hands of the beginner, as well as the ardent contest builder. The high thrust layout was selected because of the ease of adjustment and the ability to handle the hottest 15's and 19's. The long moment arm of 55% is employed for greater stability. This combination of thrust line and moment arm makes the Rod one of the fastest climbing models of today, with amazing transition.

The first model of this design was built in September of 1958 and much testing followed. Although the model wasn't exactly what I wanted, it still won several first places in good, local competition. During the early months of 1959, the final changes were made and the present day layout used. From this plan four Rods were constructed by three members of our club and myself for the 1959 FAI Eliminations..."

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
