About this Plan

V-2. Pylon race soarer for 2 function radio control.

Quote: "LIKE MOST of my models, V-2 is the result of a deliberate study of what should be the characteristics of a particular type of model - in this case, a pylon race soarer. This produced a list of requirements which are, in order of importance:

(1) It should be fast (obviously!)
(2) It should be easily controlled - very necessary when flying fast and low.
(3) It should be fairly large - to cope better with low-level turbulence.
(4) It should be capable of flying in a wide range of conditions, and
(5) It should look nice.

Working on my philosophy that a fuselage is only there to hang wings on, I considered firstly what kind of wing would meet the conditions specified, and decided that it ought to be as thin as possible with a reasonably high aspect-ratio, and with a flat bottomed section. I also decided to use coupled flaps (coupled to the elevators, that is) in order to keep the speed up in tight turns. The only consideration for the fuselage was that it should have as small a frontal area as possible, consistent with reasonable room for the radio equipment and this, together with the requirement for minimum drag, decided me to use a V-tail. (I had only to find room for one servo in the fuselage!)

Having decided what it should look like, I then had to decide how to build it, and this took me one or two 'think tank' sessions before the present method was devised. The problem was: How do you build a 6ft span wingwith an aspect ratio of 11 and a thickness of approximately 6 percent, without it being too heavy and too complex, while still having adequate strength for the stresses encountered in pylon racing? Several methods were tried and rejected - or broken! - before the construction shown and described here was developed. This gives a strong, quite flexible wing, which has proved to have very good performance yet is easy and quick to build. Like most models, it requires careful selection of wood for best results, so stick to the grades shown on the plan..."

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
