About this Plan

Southern Gentleman. Radio control sport model.

Quote: "I needed a light, forgiving, flyable airplane to learn on. Something like an Ugly Stik (oz5175). But really, anyone who has been to the University couldn't be associated with anything so crass as an Ugly Stik. Beauty is truth, truth is beauty; an Ugly Stik is truth, but beauty it ain't. So here's where the Southern Gentleman comes in. Here's a Curtiss Robin-like, Travelaire-like, Straight-wing Stinson-like, easy-to-build model airplane.

Properly aligned and trimmed, the Southern Gentleman will fly hands off, like an old time free flight. The best configuration I have found is an Enya .60 up front (though a .45 does nicely) and the light-weight Pattern Master radio gear offered by Champion Electronics of Chamblee, Ga. The Champion goodies may well be the best stuff on the market today, and it's important to have good radio gear. With limited skill, you can't afford to be sabotaged electronically.

The Southern Gentleman will be a fun airplane for you and well worth the building. It's an investment in learning to fly R/C, which has got to be one of the most difficult sports to master..."

Update 16/08/2017: Added PDFvector plan tracing, thanks to hogal.

Quote: "Attachment is my interpretation of the Southern Gentleman plan. My artistic licence has gone a little over the top on this one because I wanted it to fit onto 36" wide paper - the original is 42". The reason for this is two fold - I can change the CAD file to a .pdf easily on 36" wide paper and, secondly, most people can get to a place that will print on 36" wide paper. In changing the width I have also increased the length to 96". This has enabled me to draw both wing panels - something really easy to do in CAD and that really helps when building. I have also halved the front view as all it seems to give the plan is the dihedral of 1" at each tip. Anyway enjoy and if you do use the drawing to build from please measure at least twice before cutting. Also please inform me if you notice any mistakes."

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
