Zoomerang (oz9001)
About this Plan
Zoomerang. Radio control model. Wingspan 54in, wing area 475 sq in, for .30 - .29 power.
Quote: "Tired of slab sides and the boxy look? Try this R/C version of a FM 60s favorite with distinctive looks and construction.
The Zoomerang (oz833) first appeared in the August/September 1961 issue of Flying Models magazine as a 30 in wingspan free flight plane powered with a .049 to .099 engine. She was pendulum controlled; that is, any pitch movement was instantly corrected by a pendulum which hung from the thrust line of the fuselage and was connected by pushrod to the elevator.
The designer of Zoomerang, Keith Laumer, featured pendulum control in many of his model airplane designs. Keith is a prolific writer who has designed and built many model airplanes. Also he has written a great number of books, many of which are science fiction, short stories, screen plays and television scripts. His career included a stint in the US Army 1943-46, two degrees in Architecture from the University of Illinois 1950-52, and a tour in the USAF 1953-56. While in the US Foreign Service he acted as a Vice-Consul and Third Secretary.
I have known Keith for a number of years, ever since I did an R/C construction article on his Twin Lizzie, and still have a great admiration for his design prowess.
The Zoomerang, like the Twin Lizzie was enlarged almost two times and is now radio controlled. I worked with the magazine size plans of the original and have tried my best to faithfully reproduce the plane with as few changes as possible. The number 55 which you see displayed on the R/C version was on the original Zoomerang and is part of the chronological numbering system Keith used when he was actively building model planes.
The fuselage of Zoomerang is built upside down like a boat. Picture No. 1 shows the method quite clearly..."

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
