About this Plan
Hypodemic Nerdel. A/2 glider model.
Quote: "An outstanding A/2 Nordic glider.
Since Tom regards me as the hot-air king of this duo, the writing chores are mine. The original 'Nerdle' was designed in 1961 in hopes of raising still air performance to European levels (150-165 seconds). In the US at that time the better A-2's were doing about 30 seconds below this standard.
In the previous six years I had done well with ships in this range: first places at the Nationals; King Orange Internationals; Southwestern Championships; Tulsa Gluedobber's Championships; as well as over 40 awards at other meets; and a national A/2 record. In an article in the Zaic Yearbook for 1958 I had advised juniors especially to fly gliders (all types) in competition to develop their contest skills. By 1961, following my own advice, I felt I was capable of designing a ship of world championship calibre.
Up to that time US Nordic design had been polarized, with the Danish type at one end and the Austrian type at the other. The Danish school, led by Hansen, leaned toward robust, compact ships for rough weather. The Austrian school, originally led by Ossi Czeppa, dictated elegant and very high performance gliders suitable only for calm air.
These latter designs were doing over 3 minutes in dead air before 1954. Owing to Ritz's (US) win in the 1959 World Championships with a classic example of the Austrian type design (the 'Continental') there was a growing trend in that direction by 1961. However, I felt that Ritz's win had resulted from a combination of very rare conditions that suited his design pe-fectly, and that I would rarely have to fly in similar conditions..."

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
