About this Plan

Sopwith Strutter. Free flight scale model WWI biplane for .5cc engines. Wingspan 33-1/2 in. Scale is 1/12.

Quote: "These days of the super high power performance blowlamp type jet jobs influence a reminiscent approach by modellers who turn back into the past for WWI or WWII propellor driven subjects. The first World War aircraft attract the grater proportion of interest for free flight power, with those from the Sopwith Co at the top of the popularity list.

The Sopwith 1-1/2 Strutter is a natural selection for free flight power with its generous tail area and slim fuselage, but surprisingly few models have been seen to date. One exception is the Brian Sichi Sopwith 1-1/2 Strutter (oz1239) control line model in our plans range. Extra details for scale can be gleaned from the 1/72 and 1/48 APS scale drawings.

Structural design of this 1/12th scale model embodies all the proven fail-safe and crash proof features. The lower wing panels are retained by plywood tongues slotting into the fuselage, whilst the upper wing is constructed in two panels for ease of transport and storage. Panels are joined with a 1/8in dia dowel inside a paper tube and the whole wing retained on cabane strust by elastic bands. Undercarriage is clipped into a fuselage tube at the rear end and the front retained by bands passed through a fuselage tube and offer shock mounting. The axle is spring also by elastic bands insode the main framework.

A pendulum controlled elevator stabilises the model in the event of gust effect and is another safety factor. The prototype used a .5cc DC Dart that provided ample power for all conditions. Top weight should be 14 oz and most modellers ought to come out well below that figure..."

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
