About this Plan

Stargazer. Free flight power model.

Quote: "A double-threat free-flight contest design meeting 1948 Class A and B rules, using a .19 to .23 engine for power. The Stargazer, by Paul Del Gatto.

Notice the spinner, cowl, and the sleek lines of the fuselage which houses the retractable landing gear of the Stargazer. This combination keeps drag down to a minimum on the fuselage and its component parts.

The wing incorporates the Davis airfoil, which is noted for its low drag and high lift characteristics. 4° incidence produced the best results during flight tests, so this is used. In order to get the maximum efficiency from the Davis airfoil section, the wing is sheeted past the highest point of the camber in order to prevent sag. There is no logic in using a particular airfoil if little or no effort is made to keep the desired shape.

The Stargazer is a perennial threat at any Class A or Class B contest - so let's get busy building yours!

BUILDING: Lay out the fuse-lage crutch full size on a piece of paper. Then proceed with the ac-tual construction. While the crutch is still drying, the fuselage bulkheads may be cut out, following the full-size patterns in the drawings. The bulkheads are then cemented in place. Next add the backbone, keel strips, and the crossbraces.

After this is completed, the wing mount may be cemented in-to place. Then cement the engine mount bearers into place. Use plenty of cement - at least two coats - and allow ample time for drying. Then cut out the plywood firewall and engine mount with a coping or power saw. The plywood engine mount is screwed to the mount bearers, enabling you to interchange engines easily in a few minutes..."

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
