Lockheed U-2 (oz8247)
About this Plan
Lockheed U-2. Free flight scale model, for Jetex 150 power.
Note this plan also appeared in Mechanix Illustrated, Sept 1960.
Quote: "Seldom has an airplane lent itself so well to dual purpose model design. Powered and/or gliding flight are a relatively simple matter for this model of the famous U-2.
Two years ago Model Airplane News published the only accurate three view drawings of America's most famous 'Spy Plane', the U-2.
This sensational scoop was revealed to the nation at large, through the press, radio and TV, when a plane identified as a U-2 was downed in Russia. In its wake followed an international incident, which is still the subject of much discussion the world over.
The U-2 incident attests to the fact that model builders are pretty well informed people on the latest developments, and that MAN has been a leader in presenting the most up to date information.
When we first spotted the U-2 in this magazine two years ago, we had earmarked it for a possible Jetex-powered design. Its high aspect ratio wing and clean lines closely approximated the proportions of some of our most efficient sailplanes. But like many other ideas we had, it remained dormant until the U-2 hit the headlines with the force of an atomic explosion.
Size selected was 3/8 in to 1 ft scale, giving us a projected span of over 30 and making it ideal for the Jetex 150 Paa-Loader engine. All-balsa construction was used throughout, not only to speed assembly, but also because it lent itself to a realistic looking flying replica of the U-2.
Design changes were few, but important. Most noteworthy were the enlargement of the stabilizer, increasing the distance between the wing and tail and adding additional wing dihedral. The flight results were more than gratifying, for as we had suspected, performance was much better than what might be expected from the average authentic scale..."

ScaleType: This (oz8247) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.
If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.
Notes:
ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_U-2
Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.
Corrections? Use the correction form to tell us the new/better ScaleType link we should be using. Thanks.

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
