Quote: "Freeflight Peanut Scale Delight. Heath Racer, by Jim Alaback.

Air races in the 1930s were a popular sport that spawned many renowned designs and pilot legends. Among them was this spunky little aircraft modeled here in Peanut scale.

The Heath Racer is a 'big peanut' with about 36 square inches of wing area and a length of over 12 inches. The design is simple and allows a fairly light model structure. The completed prototype model weighed just under 15 grams without the motor or nose ballast.

Flight times outdoors run 35-40 seconds with the plastic propeller shown on the plans (available from Peck Polymers, PO Box 710399, Santee, CA 92072) near-scale 3/8-inch dihedral, and a 16-inch 2-strand motor of 1/8 wide rubber. Flight times are increased to 50-60 seconds by increasing the dihedral to 9/16 inch and changing to an 18-inch long braid-ed 4-strand motor of 1/16 wide rubber with a 6-inch diameter 7.5-inch pitch carved propeller (available from Superior Props, 2412 Tucson Ave, Pensacola, FL 32526).

The full-scale Heath Racer was built by the Heath Aircraft Corp. of Niles, Michigan from 1932 to 1936. Its wing span was 18 feet, 2 inches compared to 26 feet, 10 inches for the standard Heath Center-Wing. The engine was a Continental A-40. The plane was raced in the 115 cubic inch class in 1933, as reported in The Golden Age of Air Racing, by Schmid and Weaver (EAA Aviation Foundation, Oshkosh, WI 54903).

Construction: To keep the model light, select very light balsa (4-6 pound density) for all strip and sheet wood, except the fuselage longerons and the wing spar which can be medium density (8-10 pound).

If you have very light 1/20-inch (or 3/64-inch) balsa, it may be substituted for the 1/26-inch in the tail assembly and the fuselage, top and bottom fairing strips, to reduce overall weight and minimize any nose ballast needed for proper balance... "

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
