About this Plan

Gas Bag. Free flight power model.

Quote: "Gas Bag on Wings. By Steve Kasprzak.

THE OUTSTANDING feature of the 'Gas Bag' is that once it is on the loose it has a tendency, more so than not, to emulate a free roving gas bag. And that means time on your hands. Simple construction eliminates the use of too many uprights and cross braces while at the same time it has been designed for maximum strength. The plans presented herewith are drawn to a quarter scale while other parts are shown half and full. Let's begin by making the fuselage and landing gear assembly.

Both sides of the fuselage are made identical by building them one on top of the other. The whole frame is made from 3/16 square hard balsa. The construc-tion is very simple and should not cause any headaches, however, be sure that plenty of glue is used in each joint.

After the fuselage is assembled cut the fire wall to the dimensions on the isometric drawing. The longerons should extend 3/32 beyond the first up-right.. The fire wall should be notched to fit tightly. It is then fastened in place with plenty of glue. The landing gear is bent from 3/32 dia piano wire to the dimensions given on the isometric drawing. After this is done a piece of hard 3/32 sheet is cut to fit the inside of 'U' bend of the landing gear. This piece is then glued to the fire wall so that the upper section of the U bend in the landing gear is wedged between bottom of the motor bearers and the piece of wood itself. This distributes the shock of a hard landing to the rest. of the fuselage.

When this piece of wood is secure and the landing gear is fitted around it, another piece of hard 1/8 balsa is cut so that it covers the wire of the landing gear on the three sides. It is mportasst that the grain of this piece of wood runs across the width of the fuselage. Many coats of glue should be applied all around the landing gear. The motor bearers are pushed through fire wall and glued to the inside of the fuselage and trussed up as shown on Plate 1. The cowling is no more than a sheet of medium hard balsa. 3/16 thick cut to the proper shape, with the grain running up and down. The under cowling is made by cracking the sheet to fit the curve..."

Update 29/08/2016: Added scan of original drawings (unscaled) thanks to TonyC.

Hello Steve and Mary, Am sending the Gas bag scan done before being reduced to post on RC groups. I was once told that some of these old plans were, draw it to full size using the dimensions given, and that must be right as the article has no mention of obtaining a full size plan. All the best to you and family,

Hello Mary and Steve, a couple of pictures of the Gas Bag [more pics 003, 004]. Only one flight so far but it appears to be a well mannered and easy to fly model. Thanks for your site.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
