About this Plan
Ultimate Warrior. Radio control sport model.
Quote: "Designed to be agile with a .25, this all sheet delta moves to warp speed with a .40. Fly it if you dare! Ultimate Warrior by Pete Fairweather.
Concept: My main reason for building this model was to use a simple, permanent wing design, using balsa sheet, without cutting through the section. A delta shape was selected to allow a reasonable wing area. It was originally designed to suit an OS 25FP, and I wanted it to look sleek, with little drag and most importantly, to easily fit in the boot of my wife's Renault 5.
Build: The first job was to cut out the mating edges of the 3 pieces of 1/4 x 4 inch balsa sheet, 1/4 in deep to accept the two spruce spars, giving more rigidity to the wing; and then butt glue them together to form a large piece of sheet.
The delta shape was then cut, leaving two off-cuts that would make the two halves of the tail. The main spruce fuselage spar was then glued on the top of the wing, ensuring that the front ovelaps the front wing spar. Two 1/2 in square hardwood engine bearers were then glued to the underside, again to overlap the front wing spar. This originally formed the engine mount, and can be used if the 25 size engine is chosen.
The fin was cut to size, the 1/4 square hardwood glued to the back it. The tail pieces were cut to size, then butted to the fuselage spruce spar, the fin added and 1/2 in balsa angle, to give strength. This makes the tail 1/4 above the main wing and avoids washout.
A cage was then constructed to accept the servo's , using two pieces of 1/8 ply sheet to form bulkheads, cut out to straddle the main fuselage spruce spar, and 1/2 x 1/4 spruce bearers between, to support the servo's. The other bulkheads were glued in place, temporarily supported with balsa & pins. Each bulkhead had to be cut to accept the servo leads, fuel tube or push rods.
The aileron trailing edges were then fitted together with the actuating rods and hinges. The aileron servo mounts (spruce off-cuts) were glued in place on the top of the fuselage spruce spar, to accept the inversely mounted aileron servo.
The 3/16 ply front bulkhead was fitted, cutting out for the engine bearers and drilling for fuel tube and throttle cable. The fuselage sides were then glued to the bulkheads and 1/4 angle glued in place as fillets, including wing top to fuselage sides. This created a strong structure.
On the underside of the wing, an extra 1/2 in was added to the depth, using 1/2 in square balsa on the underside of the engine bearers, to give enough grip area when hand launching. This was then finished off with 1/8 balsa sheet, tapering all the way to the tail, and skinned to just behind the wing with 1/16 ply to withstand landing scratches..."

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
