About this Plan

Lutonia. Free flight sport cabin model, for Frog 100 power. Championship Winner at the 1948 Model Engineer Exhibition.

Quote: "THIS model was designed mainly for pleasure flying with the possible occasional entry into the precision type of contest. It was designed round the Frog 100 engine, but with slight modifications to the mount and nose is suitable for any 1 to 1.5 cc diesels. No down thrust was needed on the original model, but if more power is available this may become necessary.

On the first flight tests Lutonia flew in first-rate fashion. With slight side thrust and no offset to the fin, it kept straight into wind after hand-launching. Slight left rudder was given and a 1/32in packing strip was placed under the tailplane TE which gave a nice large circle on power and glide. About a dozen flights during two days with a rather bumpy wind of 10-15 mph did not produce the slightest scratch - need I say more! On one occasion too much fin offset was given and rather tight circles with approximately 45 degrees of bank resulted, but no sign of any nose down tendency was noticed.

In the original model a lot of extra work was put in for exhibition purposes, ie wing ribs and rear decking formers had lightening holes cut in them, but this is not really necessary and the saving in weight is very slight. A photograph of the original model being examined by HM The Queen appeared on the front cover of the August 1948 issue of Model Aircraft.

The Fuselage. The main longerons are cemented to 1/16in sheet along the top edge, the sheet starting from former B position. The uprights are then added, followed by the bottom longerons. Two opposite sides are constructed and the 1/16in ply undercarriage supports and braces added..."

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
