About this Plan

Trainer 60. Radio control trainer model for .40 to .60 power. Wingspan 65in, wing area 764 sq in. Discontinued kit from Great Planes.

Direct submission to Outerzone.

Update 29/08/2016: Replaced this plan with a corrected (aligned) version, thanks to Hemikiller.

Quote: "Steve, Attached is a corrected PDF of the GP/Bridi Trainer 60 from Oz. The current plan has a serious warp/stretch on the left edge from the scanning process, which I discovered while preparing to print it for a customer. I corrected the fault as well as possible, it'll build straight now and it's the best possible without an original full size copy to compare dimensions with. Hemikiller"

Update 12/10/2018: Added PDFvector plan tracing and CAD files, thanks to AlanSinclair.

Supplementary file notes

Previous scan version.

Trainer 60 CAD file isn't in correct size? When i open this DXF in my CNC programm to cut the wing ribs, I get a error that the rib is very small. I can't scale it to the correct size as i don't know the scale factor... Can you ask for a correct DXF drawn in mm?

If the DXF file is not working for you, then I'd say try working from the DWG file or the vector PDF file. Sorry, that's all I can suggest. CAD is not my thing.
SteveWMD - 16/05/2022
I just downloaded the CAD zip, and the DXF was to scale spot on, at 1:1. Each half-wing measured 32.5 units, each unit defined at 1inch, so definitely no error there.
Are you sure you got your output scale right, as in one unit = 1 inch,? Also, is your CNC setup in millimeters while the CAD output is in inches? This error was the reason why the Jurassic Extinction Event was 25.4 (cubed) times weaker than predicted.

The rib is 10" exactly and the wing half scales to 32.5" which matches the stated total wingspan of 65" if the wing is built with no dihedral. Use the top rib of the two shown just to the right of the wing tip - the notch for the leading edge is missing so sharpen up your xacto knife. Ignore the notched trailing edge for dimensioning purposes. The scale shown in the title block is off and the drawn nose wheel size is close enough - the wheel size for the mains are the same as the nose which does not agree with the drawing call out. Basically the vectorized pdf is correct - just scale as many items as you can before deciding what to do. Autocad has a free program called Dwg Truview that they've recently updated. It will view dxf and dwg files and let you get dimensions off the drawing. This is not a cad program but should answer many questions. The learning curve will be up to you but it is a simple thing to use.

This is a great plan with lots of detail, a really great enjoyable build and fantastic flying aeroplane. See my detailed build series for this aeroplane: "Great Planes Trainer 60 - RC Balsa Aeroplane Build Series" - https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGILJsUw3dvT4i2z0vpygI3y_qOzsqxZ8

Hi, please see attached an image of my Great Planes Trainer 60, the result of the build series mentioned above [main pic]. All the best,

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
