Mills Beam (oz7793)
About this Plan
Mills Beam. Simple stick and sheet 2 function RC model for .75 diesel engine.
Quote: "RCME's tribute to the return of the Mills 75cc diesel engine. A simple 31 in wingspan stick and sheet, two function model. Mills Beam, by David Boddington.
WHEN I RECEIVED MY IRVINE MILLS .75 replica it didn't take long to fit a 7 x 4 in prop, mount it to the test stand and fill the lank with fuel. One choked turn to suck in the fuel, one sharp flick and away she went. Turn back the compression lever and the Mills was gently popping away - just as they did 35 years ago. For modern generations with no experience of a good quality Mills engine all I can say is - you have a real treat in store.
To celebrate the return of the Mills .75 I drew up the 'Mills-Beam', a fun machine that is quick and economic to build. The prototye turned out a little tail heavy, so I have lengthened the nose to counteract this tendency. Do use light balsaword for the tail surfaces and keep the battery well forward. I used Fleet radio with mini-servos, you may have to widen the fuselage for standard servos, 25o mAh or 125 mAh nicads are recommended.
Cut out all parts before commencing construction, this is particularly important for the fin, rudder and F1, which drawings will be out through when joining the fuselage drawing. General construction should be obvious from the drawings and photographs. The fin and tailplane are glued together before fitting to the fuselage and rudder and elevators hinged aflerwards.
All wing ribs are identical in shape, the tapered trailing edge has washout automatically incorporated on the ribs, Trim the leading and trailing edges of the ribs after construction. Alter epoxying the two wing panels together (the root ribs are angled to the template) strengthen the centre section joint with glasscloth and resin or nylon doped in position.
I chose to finish the model with clear dope, sanded between coats, and lima the decoration to Solarfilm patterns ironed onto the surface. One coat of matt polyurethane was applied for fuel proofing. Closed loop rudder control and pushrod operation of elevator were fitted. The undercarriage is sprung by small rubber bands taken from the woodscrew around the front of the piano wire undercarriage..."

Quote: "Hi Steve and Co, A long time ago I made a comment on the Mills Bomb plan you host to the effect that there was also a smaller Mills Beam plan published for the 1/2A Mills engine. The Mills Beam was published in March 1988. I eventually found the plan and article in pieces on the net and have made them into PDFs for Outerzone ...Thanks, Simon"

Hello Outerzone team, Please find attached a picture of my Mills Beam, built from the plan on Outerzone [pic 004]. Engine is a Irvine Mills replica. Flies great when the engine is running, but very bad gliding capabilities. Weight 360g equipped and balanced.Vincent - 28/02/2022
Mills Beam built from Outerzone plan [main pic]. Original English Mills .75 engine, this is a fun model. Keep the tail as light as you can to save having to use too much nose weight to balance.

Notes
* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
