About this Plan

Galaxie. Free flight power model. 585 sq in wing area.

Quote: "Hi Steve/Mary. I recently helped my son clean out his attic, and we found some plans I thought had been lost long ago. Some kit plans, some Aeromodeller plans, I'll get them scanned and cleaned as time permits. Here is the kit version of the Galaxie 585, designed by Vic Cunnyngham Jr. Kyosho called it the "Geodetic" Galaxie. Cheers, KraftyOne."

Quote: "Hi Guys, I just realized there are no wing or tailplane ribs shown on the Galaxie plan. I have contacted a mate who built one, he made templates of the ribs, and believes he still has them somewhere. He said that the wing rib is typical Clark Y, just like the tailplane outline on the plan, just slightly larger of course ...Here is the scan of some of the extra ribs my mate cut when he built the "Geodetic" Galaxie. He was not happy with the quality of some wood supplied in the kit, heavy where it should be light, and light where it should be strong. BTW, he maintains that it is just a cross-braced structure, the terms 'Geodetic' or 'Geodesic' do not really apply here. Yes, he is a bit pedantic at times... Cheers, KraftyOne."

Hi Steve, If this is the big 585 Galaxie as the title states, then the wing span is about six feet -- I don't remember exactly. The 1/2-A Galaxie is 49in wingspan and it's about 310 sq. inches. Regardless, it's great to see these competition gas model plans made available again.

Doh. Thanks Simon. 66in wingspan it is. Fixed this listing now.

Hi Steve, I'm currently building an original kyosho kit for the Galaxie and have to say that it is a truly dreadful kit. The wood is hard and heavy and the parts are cut inaccurately forcing much rework and replacement. In any event, the worst issue is the plan itself as shown here. Don't use the right hand wing half shown! Not only is the chord approx. 1/8" too narrow, it is also distorted regarding spar, L.E. and T.E. locations.
Use only the left hand half as it is just fine. I shot it with PAM cooking spray, wiped excess off with paper towels and flipped it over to build the right wing panel as it makes the paper translucent.

On this Geodetic Galaxie 585, how does it support horizontal stabilizer? Its front edge, there are center vertical and horizontal brackets, and may be secured by rubber bands, how does come rubber bands to horizontal brackets? I'm making this Galaxie now.
mhs - 24/02/2023
MHS, the stab is supported by the horizontal platform at the leading edge, the spruce strip is glued to the front edge of it and the stab pivots against it. The vertical pieces at the front and rear of the stab key into the sheeting underneath the stab to hold alignment with the front key notched at the top for a rubber band and at the bottom at an angle to limit how far the stab is allowed to pivot, normally a 45-degree angle, the rubber band is probably wrapped around the bottom of the fuselage to hold the stab down and provide the force to pivot it. I would get the structure built then trim the front key until I achieved the angle I needed.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
