About this Plan

Terrier. Free flight sport model. Designed for .5cc diesels.

Quote: "A rugged good-looker with simple structure for quick building. The Terrier, by Brian Lewis.

Designed for .5 cc diesels the Terrier was created in an attempt to prove that 'quickie' construction can be obtained without the crudeness of line that is so often apparent these days. The original model was designed, built and flown all inside the same week by one who does not claim to be a fast builder. For the newcomer to power flying it should be an ideal job.

Construction: Cut out the fuselage sides from soft or medium 1/16 balsa. Sandpaper the window frames, fill the grain and colour dope the edges about 1/16 in from the inside. Cut the celluloid windows about 1/8 in larger all round than the frames and cement to the fuselage sides on the inside. This method produces a better-looking window and makes it easier when applying the final finish. Join the fuselage sides using formers F1, F2, F3, and F4. When set, bring the ends together over the plan and cement F5 and F6 in place. Cut bearers, drill out slightly undersize for engine bolts and screw 8 BA bolts in place letting them cut their own thread in the bearers. Glue bearers in place.

Now file grooves in the front of the bearers, as shown on the plan, to take the needle valve and the fuel tube. This is rather a tricky job, but is worth taking time over to get it right. Cement pieces U1 inside fuselage sides leaving a 1/16 gap between U1 and F2 to slide u'cart up into. Note that the bearers project 1/16 in. behind F2 to stop the u'cart going through the roof. Slide u'cart in place and cement F2A to F2. Cement 3/16 x 1/16 strips in front of F2 and cement gussets U2 in place, fit tail-wheel. Sheet top and bottom with 1/32 sheet and cement cabin roof in place. Fit pieces C1 to bearers: when dry, cement 3/16 sheet cowling sides and bottom in place. Cement small pieces of scrap block inside corners of cowling at front and sand it to a smooth curve. Carve cowling top from medium balsa, hollow out to -| in. thick, and make fixing from cycle spoke as shown on plan.

Wing: Start with the leading edge, cement 1 mm ply brace in position. Pin one leading edge to plan, add TE, tips, ribs and spar in that order. Remove from plan and repeat for other wing. Build centre section on plan, add gussets, 1/32 sheeting and LE fairing. Cut riblets from 1/16 sheet, indoor fashion, but do not cement in place until sanding has been completed. Tail-plane and fin are cut from medium 3/32 sheet. Cement fin to tailplane, but do not cement tail unit to fuselage until after flight testing. Cover entire model with lightweight Modelspan. Give two coats of clear dope and one coat of coloured dope.

Flying: Model should balance under main-spar plus or minus 1/2 in. Wings should be flat or have slight washout at tips. Set motor at 2° down and 2° right thrust. Fit tail unit with rubber band and check for glide, if nose heavy add weight to fuselage in box under tailplane. If tail heavy, add positive to tailplane. Cement tail unit in place after trimming. With slight right rudder, model should climb and glide in RH circles."

Update 15/02/2016: Replaced this plan with a clearer copy (patterned background removed) thanks to rchopper56.

Quote: -"Hi Steve and Mary, I started out to remove the background of the Terrier drawing submitted by Sundancer but soon realized that I could not do it justice. The next step was to recreate the drawing in cad. Took longer than I care to admit for it is a very busy drawing. Looks like it was drawn up for a novice builder but I would not recommend for a novice. The enclosed pdf file is two pages, contains also the construction article redone using optical character recognition software (OCR). The drawing is not a vector file."

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
