About this Plan

Up 'N' Atom. Free flight gas model.

Quote: "A 1/2A free-flight with a low aspect-ratio wing that has a superbly fast climb, and a good flat glide.

The 'Up N Atom' is a name which fits this model design to perfection: it's a compact rugged performer with plenty of power, it will burn up the skyways when you give it a chance.

Outwardly the plane appears to be in accordance with many conventional shoulder-wing designs, except possibly for its slightly lower wing aspect ratio. However, an important feature which undoubtedly contributes greatly to the model's performance is the use of the LDC-2 laminar flow airfoil section, which was developed in England some years ago. We have used this airfoil section on several occasions and always with great success.

Because of the model's ruggedness and the ease with which it can be adjusted, it is an ideal model for contest flying. If you prefer a light ship with less power for contests, use an .039 cubic inch displacement engine instead of the Space Bug .049. For sport flying, an .020 Infant will do just fine.

Building the model is very simple despite its streamlined appearance and will require only a few spare evenings to complete.

Fuselage. After enlarging the plans to twice their present size, or obtaining the full-size plans (see Page 44), cut out the basic fuselage silhouette from 3/8 in hard sheet balsa. Then cut out the 1/8 plywood firewall and cement it temporarily to the basic frame. Using the plywood firewall as a guide, cement the soft balsa blocks temporarily in place and carve to the approximate desired shape..."

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
