Wizard 700 (oz7353)
About this Plan
Wizard 700. Contest power fee flight model.
Quote: "Tremendous contest potential in this AMA Class A or unlimited Free-Flight. Use a .15 to .23 mill, 81-1/2 inch span, 693 sq inch, a profile fuselage for the lazy. Wizard 700, by Ron St Jean.
We feel that the model presented on these pages probably represents the best design of the author to date. It is one of the few models that has flown right of the board. On the first day at the field, we were test gliding the '700' and inadvertently impressed several by-standers when it glided clear across the approach channel at Sepulveda Basin, then circled back to land right in the ditch. The duration of this test glide was estimated to have been between 30 and 40 seconds. Like its predecessor, the Ramrod (oz6344) it was wide open on the third flight, and right in the groove. On the basis of this test gliding and the first three flights, several sets of plans were asked for by other modelers.
The Wizard 700 has been designed for .19 to .23 sized engines for the unlimited rules presently being flown in California. If built for existing AMA rules, the 700 can efficiently utilize a good 15.
Design Evolution.The Wizard evolved from the 'Extended Ramrod.' A few shortcomings were found in the extended 'rods,' so more design investigations were called for. For one thing, downthrust was increased from 10° to 12° for better VTOs. It was discovered that the Extended Ramrods tended to zero out at fairly high velocity. This was deduced to be due to the fact that the center of pressure was behind the lateral bending line of the rectangular wing. To correct this situation, this design employs tapered wing tips which effectively moves the center of pressure forward for the wing as a whole. The pylon height and wing tip area have been increased and the rudder height was first decreased, then brought back to its original height, in an effort to create a strong right hand power pattern. All this was not enough, however, and we finally had to go to right thrust.
Several years ago we tried a Ramrod 500 utilizing rib-over-spar type wing construction and wound up with a dog. Originally we thought the 500 was just too small, but later deduced that the 10% flat bottom section we started with, wound up being an 11% section with 01% undercamber. We have found that sections, where the top camber is more than 10% just don't fly well at low wing loadings. On the Wizard we wished to gain the free undercamber created by this type of construction, but at the same time..."

Notes
* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
