Mick Bates, many years a control line enthusiast, decided that the 'Raydic' would suit his present state of R/C progress, he had soloed on a Ben Buckle Buccaneer the previous year. Having a desire for a vintage glider - and one that had not previously been seen on the British flying fields - the Raydic became a natural choice, the draughting exercise only adding to the challenge and interest.
History. Original design by Frank Zaic and published in his Model Aeronautic Year Book 1951-52. Intended as a basic glider for R/C with light, simple construction and designed to be stable in small circles, to keep it from drifting too far. Used for R/C on slope, towline and power pod, with 50 kits released for field checks, a reported highest duration of four hours was made for the Raydic.
General design features of original. Fuselage of square section box consruction 42 in long incorporating fin. Polyhedral wing of 84 in span with Clark Y section set at a high incidence of 6° and an area of 720 in sq. Tailplane of 30 in span with Clark Y section of 0° incidence with a noticeably short moment arm.
Design details incorporated in MEB redesign:
Fuselage has mounting for servos, hatch for access to flight battery pack, ballast compartment, sheet covered nose section, mounting for detachable tailplane.
Wing in two pieces with strengthened root section of inner panel to take wire joiners/dihedral braces. Washout built into both outer panels. Held on to fuselage with bands which pass through hole in pod pylon.
Tailplane mounted through access at base of fin and held with bands. Elevators added within the existing planform requiring constructional changes.
Power pod of original design as no details on the plan. Pylon is sandwiched between wing halves with wire joiners passing through to give clean drag-free attachment. Pod is of circular cross section and streamlined shape, again to give minimum drag.
The engine is partly cowled to blend with the spinner and the specially built tank enclosed within the pod. The position of the pod has been arranged so that when removed there is little or no change to the CG.
Two channel radio installation follows normal practice with servos mounted on hardwood bearers operating pushrods to the elevator and rudder. Receiver mounted in front of servos with batteries positioned as far forward as possible into nose utilising hatch for access.
Construction. This follows original design with changes as required for R/C as described above.
Fuselage. Basic box section fom 3/16 in sq hard balsa with two 1/8 in ply main formers at wing mounting position. Nose and centre section sheeted with medium/soft 1/16 in for added strength. Removeable hatch cover for access to ballast compartment and batteries. Built up integral fin with sheet rudder over sheeted tailplane mounting platform. Wing supports added to fuselage to give correct dihedral and incidence..."

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
