About this Plan

Dennyplane Junior. Free flight gas model.

Quote: "Traced from an original plan, Bill Thompson Nov 8, 1964."

This seems to be a faithful hand-traced copy of the original kit plan, circa 1937. Since this is the closest thing we have to an original Dennyplane drawing, have set this one as primary. We'll link to here from other Dennyplane Junior plans.

Direct submission to Outerzone.

Note for some history on Reginald Denny and the Dennyplane Junior, see Litl Dennyplane Junior (oz1077) which includes a good article covering the history plus some nice old pics.

Hi Steve, For those that may not be aware, Reginald Denny [see more pics 003] was an English actor of stage and screen who had a successful Hollywood career as a leading man from the 1920s to the 1950s (he was a one-time consort of Hedy Lamarr). During WW1 he served as an observer/gunner with the RFC and maintained his interest in aviation afterwards by performing as a stunt flyer in the 1920s and by opening the Reginald Denny Hobby Shop in 1934 on Hollywood Boulevard (which lasted until the mid 1960s). He bought a model engine design from Walter Righter in 1938 and marketed it as the 'Dennymite'. It seems the 'Dennyplane' was based on the Fairchild 24 owned by one of his associates, but somewhat simplified to ease construction. During WW2 he and his business partners made 15,000 radio controlled target drones for the US Army (the OQ-2 Radioplane) until selling out to Northrop in 1952. Apparently, Marilyn Monroe worked as an assembler at Radioplane until she was spotted by Capt. Ronald Reagan (yes, that one), a friend of Denny's, who was then a US Army photo-publicist. Her career began when he persuaded her to take up modelling work (no, not the balsa and glue kind!). More information from Mr Denny's son here: http://www.ctie.monash.edu.au/hargrave/dennyplane.html

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
