About this Plan

German Saucer. Unconventional free flight sport model.

Quote: "For Free Flight Fun: German'Saucer' by Ernst Skirde.

Bored with run-of-the-mill models? Here is a simple, unbreakable 'saucer' that can be tossed together within an hour's time. Practically foolproof, it was the sensation of the German Nationals at Kassel, in Germany.

Instructions are almost unnecessary, if a few basic dimensions are adhered to. Primarily, it is a ducted fan, with rotor blades attached to the engine mount. Dimensions have been converted to the nearest inch equivalents of the original metric plans.

The 'shroud' is the first item built. Using 1-3/8 width of bristolboard, a 6 in diameter form should be secured for wrapping the first 'ring.' Once the seam or overlap is cemented together, add the second and third layers and set aside to dry. Round needle-nosed pliers will be needed now. The rotor blades are a little tricky, but not really difficult, once the drawings are understood, Starting about 12 in from the end of a length of 1/16 dia spring steel wire, bend the 'jog' that is needed where the rotor arms cross. The arms now bend upwards to where they pass through the shroud (or duct) then again downwards to achieve a drooping dihedral effect in the rotors. The difficult part, bending the tip, or 'pitch' angle, is left till later.

Holes should he pierced through the shroud for the rotor arms after the shroud has been slipped off its form. Four equi-distant holes, 3/8 in up from the bottom (or trailing) edge of the shroud takes care of this phase. Now we slip the almost-finished rotor arms through their respective holes and mount the engine firewall..."

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
