About this Plan

Sport Flyer 40. Radio control sport model for 40 power.

Quote: "This Sport Flyer 40 is a fun-flying, sporty looking machine designed for the experienced pilot. Designed by L.O. Fgic.

The Sport Flyer is a sorta classic, sporty looking, low wing, conventional gear, fun-flying machine capable of any maneouvre you'd like to fly into or wring out of it. It has exceptionally clean ground handling, a gentle lift-off, moves out well in the air, and lands smooth and easy. What more could you ask?

The Sport Flyer 40 was designed for the experienced RC pilot by a very successful designer of RC models who shuns notoriety. He therefore has used the pseudonym, L.O. Fgic. We understand the hyrogliphics stand for something like, Little Old Fat Guy In California. He shall, therefore, remain nameless to all but those of us who were fortunate to have been involved with him on this project. Our point is the L.O. did the genius stuff in designing the plane. We just wrote the building instructions.

A rugged, stable design, the Sport Flyer's construction uses techniques familiar to just about anyone who has had experience in building a kit. The engine compartment will house either a AO 2-stroke machine or 4-stroker no you have the option of using whatever power plant you feel is best. Our prototype was flown with a 2-stroker because that's what we had handy. As shown on the plans, the engine, wing. and stab incidence are all set at zero. (The 1/8 in fuselage top block which

runs from the firewall to the tail is the datum line from which the incidence is measured.) To make sure that we had no down incidence in the wing, however, we set up ours with just a tad (112 degree) positive. The prototype flew great that way so you may want to set up your wing in the same way. You will also note two CG locations shown on the plans. As is usually the case, the forward position is more stable. The rearward CG location will allow you to fly maneuvers like snap rolls and such more dynamically.

The cowling and canopy are available through either Global Hobby Distributors, 10725 Ellis Ave., Fountain Valley, California 92728-8610 or Hobby Shack, 18480 Bandilier Circle, Fountain Valley, California 92728. Check your RCM for Hobby Shack's 800 telephone numbers. The wheel pants are from Hobby Shack's EZ Decathalon .40.

Since this aircraft is intended for experienced R/C pilots who prefer to build rather than read about how to build our assembly, instructions are written with that fact in mind. Rather than going through the construction step by step, we'll comment about some aspects of the assembly here and there..."

I remember the magazine article when it was published, and still have that issue somewhere in my stash. This design came out as a kit about a year later (1990-1991) by Global. I purchased one and flew it as my "trainer" -- it was my first taildragger, and my first low-wing model. Not a bad model, builds super quick, but the tail attachment area is a little weak internally. A thickening doubler for the sides would be a good idea.

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
