About this Plan

Tzigane. A2 class competition glider.

Quote: "Tzigane. An International A2 Class Glider, by Eddie Black.

THE ninth model in the Tzigane series was built in 1959 and has proved so consistent that it has been used as a number one model up to the present day, although other A2s have been built meantime. However, some minor changes have been made, since the model was built to improve consistency, such as the fitting of a clockwork DT and substituting a forward fin for the original rear mounted one.

It tows well in all weather conditions and is stable in high winds, with a very quick recovery from any upset. The structure is very strong with no weak points. Wing section is Isacson 73508 with trailing edge droop. I have used this section in several models and it is my favourite for all weather gliders.

Some contests results include: 1st A/2 Team Trials 1959; 2nd Scottish Nationals 1959; 1st Scottish Nationals 1960, 1961 1963; 2nd PAA Festival 1960, 2nd Novocastria Gala 1960; 2nd Scottish Gala 1962: 1st Glasgow Rally 1963; Overall Scottish glider champ 1963.

Construction: Build the flying surfaces first. The soft balsa tip laminations are bent round a row of pins, with scrap balsa underneath to continue the rib undercamber. When dry, the lamination is lifted and sanded underneath, then returned to the plan. When fitting the leading edge sheet, the laminations are pared away so that the sheet can he neatly faired into the tip. Both wing halves are completed except for root sheeting, pinned together flat on the board, lining up with a straight edge and then the top sheeting is applied in one piece.

When dry, the wing is turned over and notches cut from the nbs to take the joiner tubes. These tubes are fitted, remembering to plug the ends as a stop for the dural joiners and the bottom sheet added..."

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
