Hi Steve, This is a picture of graupner maxi. Regards,

Hello! Which auxiliary strip is to be used for the MAXI-rib-wing?
Reinhard Lehmann - 13/06/2021
Reinhard, not really sure what you mean by auxiliary strip... is it something you're seeing on the plan?
RC Yeager - 13/06/2021
Spar Web?
Circlip - 14/06/2021
2mm Balsa, grain vertical?
Circlip - 14/06/2021
Dear RC Yeager, I added a copy from the "Caravelle"-plan to my question to the admin... Still hoping for an answer...
Reinhard Lehmann - 14/06/2021
Circlip, a vertical grain web is glued to the front face of the top and bottom spars between the ribs forming a c-section spar, Leave no space between edge of web and rib. It will add strength with little weight. For the other question asked, they may be referring to the strips on top and bottom of ribs which provide a smooth surface between leading edge and trailing edge planking.
Douglas Babb - 14/06/2021
Is it the rib caps? If so they are 2mm balsa. Width about 6mm. When I make rib cabs the grain is spanwise. Same as Dbox.
KLH - 15/06/2021
Douglas, since Circlip does a lot of editing on plans here on Outerzone, I think he knows what the spar webs are. His questions were just his way of trying to suggest what Reinhard might have been referring to by "auxiliary strip". Nice explanation on what spar webs are though.
RC Yeager - 15/06/2021
Reinhard... I can't see anything that you sent directly to the administrator (Steve, Mary) but I checked out the Caravelle plan to see if I could determine what you are referring to and I was able to spot it... the strip of wood used to block up the trailing edge of the semi-symmetrical ribs during construction.
I don't think you're going to get a definitive answer to that question since this Maxi version with the built up wing does not appear to address that. Since the airfoils of the Caravelle and the Maxi are both semi-symetrical (not the same but similar) and both taper towards smaller ribs at a similar rate, my suggestion would be to use a strip of wood similar to the one you have used to build your Caravelles.
Using a constant height strip of wood to block the trailing edge of a tapered wing creates progressive washouts towards the tip, which helps stability and helps prevent tip stalling. DO NOT, however, block the ribs with a constant height strip of wood under THE LEADING EDGE of the wing, because this will result in a wing that has wash-in towards the tips, which is usually, uh, not good.
RC Yeager - 15/06/2021
Morning all. It turns out Reinhard did email us a jpg grabbed from the Caravelle plan, which does help explain his question. Have just found that. Essentially the "auxiliary strip" is exactly as RCYeager says "the strip of wood used to block up the trailing edge of the semi-symmetrical ribs during construction". That would of course have been an excellent way to ask the question, the first time around. On the Caravelle (oz8009) plan it is labelled as "auxiliary strip for assembly of wing" see sheet 2.

Of course this plan was drawn up by OktayGulmez, not Graupner. We don't have Oktay's contact details on hand. I don't see a way to answer this question, beyond saying to ensure the wing has some washout when completed.
SteveWMD - 15/06/2021
Thanks very much !
I will measure the ribs and perhaps I use a tailing egde as auxiliary sprip. Maybe 10 mm x 50 mm or similar, I will try, when I built the Rib-wing...
Why doI plan this ? The one who built my present MAXI used a too hot iron, when he covered the wings,so the downside sheeting got waves...
Reinhard Lehmann - 20/06/2021
The guy who built the rib-wing Maxi used a ribset with "feet" which make an auxiliarystrip obsolete !
Reinhard Lehmann - 27/06/2021
That's the "belt OR braces" approach instead of the more common "belt AND braces". The latter would provide an interesting incidence problem.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
