About this Plan

Nameless Frank Zaic design. Free flight rubber sport model.

Quote: "How to make a model airplane. Was going through some books in the attic and came across a 1951 edition of The Book of Knowledge - The Children's Encyclopedia by The Grolier Society Inc... enjoy. I re-scanned at a higher resolution, made the plans full size, and cleaned up the text..."

Quote: "THE building and flying of model-airplanes will give you many hours of pleasure and will help you understand why planes fly. But, you may say, model-building is much too hard and too expensive. Actually, it is quite easy to make a model-plane, once you know how to use the various materials. And you can make the model described in this article for something like fifty cents; half of this amount will be for the rubber motor. As for tools, all you will need will be a single-edge razor, ordinary pliers, pins, a board, a sharp knife and some sandpaper.

SUPPLIES

You will need:
Balsa wood; see the specifications shown in figure 1.
2 feet of .032 wire, for the landing gear and propeller shaft.
1 propeller block, 1-3/8 x 7/8 x 8 inches.
6 washers, 3/16 in diameter.
2 wooden model wheels, 7/8 in diameter.
1 hardwood dowel, 1" long and %" in diameter.
8 to 12 strands of 1/8 in rubber.
Several sheets of colored tissue paper to be used as covering.
1 ounce of model cement.
1 ounce of model dope.

You can buy these supplies at any airplane-model shop. If there is no such shop near you, consult a model magazine for a list of supply companies. Write to these for free catalogs, so that you may order what you want by mail.

GENERAL REMARKS

Try to work in a basement or workroom where shavings and dust will cause as little annoyance as possible to other members of the family. If such a place is not available, work in the kitchen and sweep up shavings after you finish. Put on old clothing when you plan to work. It is best to work on a large board, on which you can set the plans of the model. When your working hours are over, simply put your board out of the way until the next session. In selecting the board, keep in mind your future projects. If you intend to make big models later, get a large-size board, made of soft wood.

To prevent spilling your cement and dope, use containers with wide bases, such as cans. All containers should be kept closed when not in use, to keep the liquid from evaporat-ing and from being spoiled by too long con-tact with the air. You will find that a little of the liquid, which has become solid, will col-lect at the opening of the container. You can cut this off with a sharp razor.

The tools mentioned above are all you will need to construct this particular model. If you do a lot of model-building later on, you will find the following items useful; a small block plane; various grades of sandpaper; soap or wax; a steel-edge ruler; a T square; a French curve; a compass; drawing paper and thumbtacks; good soft brushes; a hack saw; a hand drill; several files.

PLANS

We give you the complete plans of the various parts of the plane in the diagrams that accompany this article. Before you begin work on the wings, fuselage, stabilizer and rudder, you should make full-sized plans of these parts, using the dimensions as shown..."

Have to question the photo. The tail is a different shape and is not of a 'cabin' model. Anther of Zaic's designs, perhaps?

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
