About this Plan

Jimmie Allen Bluebird. Parasol rubber power sportster. Skelly Oil Co legend appears on the plan.

Update 19/07/2012: Added 2 pics by Eric Boehm [see more pics 001, 002] showing his very nicely finished Bluebird model.

Note the main planfile here is a scan of a reprint in Aeromodeller Dec 1990, in a Vintage Corner Special: The World of Jimmie Allen, by Alex Imrie.

Update: Added vectorPDF plan, thanks to DPlumpe.

Update 7/6/2025: Added kit instructions, thanks to dfritzke.

Quote: "The JIMMIE ALLEN BLUE BIRD, a parasol monoplane, is a light, stable miniature airplane capable of taking off and flying under its own power. All control surfaces are adjustable and consequently, this plane can be made to fly in a straight line or to describe circles in either direction. It will bank, turn and climb just as a large ship does and is capable of lifting about one-fifth its weight. The completed model should weigh not less than four ounces and not more than 51/2 ounces.

After checking the bill of material to be sure that you have all the required parts, you are ready to commence work.

Important Note: Do not attempt any construction work until you have read these instructions through carefully and have studied the drawing and photographs. Precision and accuracy are of paramount importance in model work. Use a sharp razor blade or balsa wood splitting knife for all joints and be sure that each is a perfect fit. Allow all cemented joints to dry thoroughly before handling. All balsa members, particularly those used in building the fuselage, should be sanded lightly to a smooth finish.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ASSEMBLY: Fuselage: 1. Secure a soft, flat board or cardboard (about 8 in x 4 ft). This will serve as your layout board. 2. Make a full sized pencil layout on this board of the fuselage (diagram of fuselage is shown half size). 3. Place transparent wax paper over the layout. 4. Stick ordinary pins along the layout line. 5. Cut two lengths of 1/8 x 1/8 balsa about 22-1/2 in long. (Longerons). 6. Lay longerons along top line and bottom line of layout against the pins. 7. Cut the vertical members for Positions 1 to 10 inclusive of 1/8 x 1/8 balsa as per length shown and Wood Weld in place. Cut and fit a 1/8 x 1/8 balsa brace to fit between bottom of 3 and top of 4 as shown. Cement in place. 8. Repeat steps 5, 6 and 7. You now have the two sides of the fuselage and they should be exactly alike..."

See my Bluebird built from the plans on your site [pics 003, 004]. Had to make a few changes for electric power but it still looks like a Bluebird. Uses an E-flite 300 motor, two mini servos and a Berg receiver, 7 ounces ready to fly with 2 cell 300 battery. Covered with Doculam and painted with Rustoleum, one THIN coat, decals made from Testors decal paper and printed on my printer.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
