About this Plan

Schweizer SGS 1-34. Radio control scale glider model. Wingspan 8 foot. Scale is 1/6.

Quote: "Steve, Here is that Sterling Schweizer SGS 1-34 plan. Sterling kit # FS26. Span 8' 2.5" - 250cm, 615 sq. inches, 2.25 lbs (no R/C), 2" = 1'. The plans I obtained are pretty bad, builder did not use wax paper and lots of the plan must have been stuck to the structure. No ribs or bulkheads shown either. But, it may encourage someone to submit something better!"

Update 16/02/2021: Added kit review from RCM, May 1973, thanks to RFJ.

Quote: "RCM Test Report: Sterling Model's Schweizer. Product test by Bill O'Brien. If you're looking for a scale sailplane for this we suggest this model of the famous SChweizer 1-34.

For R/C scale sailplane enthusiasts, the Sterling Models Schweizer 1-34 is a 98-1/2 inch span scale model of this famous competitive sailplane sporting an overall wing area of 615 square inches and an all-up weight of approximately 2-3/4 lbs. At a scale of 2 in = 1 ft, the Sterling Schweizer 1-34 contains an extremely high degree of scale fidelity and is excellent for scale competition. The fuselage is constructed of basic fuselage sides with bulkheads and stringers to form the graceful contours of the Schweizer 1-34. The wing is a fairly conventional construction utilizing ailerons and plug in wing panels. An optional power pod assembly for a .09 engine and 2 oz. tank are shown on the most complete Sterling plans. In addition, full scale details, 3-view drawings and photographs of the Schweizer SGS 1-34 are shown on the plans.

While Sterling's model of the 1-34 is not a beginner's model from either a construction or a flying standpoint, for the sailplane enthusiast with some construction and flying time behind him, the model should present no difficulty. As is typical with most scale models, the building time is extensive in order to achieve the scale outlines of the full sized prototype. From a flying standpoint, the Sterling Schweizer 1-34 is a fast aircraft and, with additional ballast, could probably hold its own quite well in speed tasks.

If you're interested in a scale model of the Schweizer 1-34, look for the Sterling kit No. FS-26 at your hobby dealer. Tested, Approved and Recommended by RCM."

I spent maybe 5 or 6 hours cleaning this plan up, and getting it to this state. If anyone out there feels like grabbing it now and filling in the gaps, making it clearer, do feel free. I won't be hurt or upset.

Indeed. It is tagged here as 'formers incomplete'. That is why.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
