About this Plan

Reaper. Radio control sports model.

Quote: "From RCM, 'The Reaper' Funmodel Designer Brian Chase, Span 52,5in, Length 27in, Engine .20 -.32 Cub Inch, Radio 3-4 Channel."

Quote: "After looking at the stack of wood in the corner for nearly a year (I admit I'm a pack rat), I decided to try something a little different. I looked at the flying wings on the market and then looked at my 1/2A CL combat planes and then it came to me! I grabbed the remains of a wing out of the corner and started cutting and gluing. First I cut the leading edge out of the center rib bay and added a radio bay and and firevwall. Second, I had to have an elevator so I added twin tail booms like the CL, but decided to raise the tail 3 in to get the elevator out or the wing wash since it was so short coupled. Third, I added landing gear, engine, radio, etc... and was ready to go flying. (It took longer than it sounds.)

The next morning I snuck out to the filee before anyone showed up so as not to make a fool of myself if this didnt work. I started and tuned the engine. I put the plane on the runway for some taxiing to check ground stability, but as I gave the plane about quarter throttle, the thing leaped off the ground and was airborne and climbing out steeply! Alter the shock wore off, I gave it a little down trim and it was flying surprisingly well. I did some loops, rolls, hard turns etc.. then decided it was time to land. I throttled back and the plane slowed into a nice glide and landed nice and level. I have been terrorizing the sky ever since. The first plane was a bit heavy because of the cut and add process.

Due to combat fatalities. I built a second prototype and added twin rudders. The rudders, were more effective so they were removed. By the thord anfd final prototype, the rudders were left off, the booms were built as a fin, and the servos were moved back to help the balance. I was able to decrease the weight by 1-1/2 pounds, even with the landing gear installed..."

Build it with out landing gear if you have a nice grass field. This makes I lighter and a lot less drag. Once you get use to how quick and maneuverable it is, try it with out the wing tips and the roll rate will blow you away. Try going vertical and just as you get going good push both sticks up and in, this will create a an unbelievable inverted flat spin. Do not panic if you cant pull out, the engine torque will prevent you from pulling out of the spin so to stop the spin cut the throttle and the nose will drop out and you can then fly it out of the spin with no problem.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
