    ScaleType: This (oz4070) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.

    If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.

    Notes:
    ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Maryland
    Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
    For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

Here’s my rendition of Joe Ott’s 1942 Martin Maryland Bomber [main pic, 004-006] nearing completion after four months of lethargic labor. It’s not a difficult build in spite of my slow going. Aircraft has a truly intriguing background story. Exploits of Wing Commander Adrian Warburton RAF have served as my inspiration. Operated primarily out of North Africa and Malta, hence the beige tissue covering. Thank you so much for the plan Steve and Mary.

Long time no write, Neal! Another pretty one for the stable, I'll be waiting to see how she turns out when finished. The camel skin top cover is an appropriate material and colour for the Desert, yes sir.
I was surprised to see that portrait photo: look at the plexiglass plate with the reflection. It's a flat plate on a rounded fuselage. I don't recall seeing this construction detail anywhere.

Hi Miguel...yes, I'm still out here...lingering in the mist. That is an interesting photo, the reflection. Those late 30's aircraft cut some corners when it came to glazing (no pun intended). I'm certain it was a time and cost aid to production. Check out the nose glazing of the Do17...many flat panels.

Hi Neal, this plot is thickening like molasses left outside on a snowy day! Looking again at the photo, Warburton is wearing a side cap whereas the reflection has a peaked cap! It's not Warburton, that's the shy guy to his left hiding behind the prop blade, the sheepskin lapel is the clue :-))

I never did care much for molasses...unless someone's worked the magic to turn it into rum. :) Since the dashing young Wing Commander was blonde and handsome...and a dapper dresser...he's the gentleman in the center of the photo. Don't know who that is in the glass...no matter.

I finally completed the little bits that give a model its identity...still maintaining an RAF desert scheme with Wing Commander Adrian Warburton in mind [pics 009, 010]. Like most (all) Ott/Whitman designs...NOT exact scale with details to match the designer's personal building preferences. One can knock themselves out correcting it all...or merely build in the style. That's what I've done. Dorsal gun turret has been eliminated in the interest of weight. Was probably ineffective anyway. Thank you for indulging me. The Maryland was a sleek fighter/bomber that lacked sufficient payload and performance to make it really efficient in either role. On the other hand it had just enough character to become outstanding as a photo/recon aircraft. Speaking of "Warby," the ace (9 victories) went MIA in 1944 with his remains being finally recovered 58 years later in 2002. Thanks again, Steve and Mary.

Thanks, Neal. Great to see this one finally finished. Hoping it flies as well as it looks!

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
