About this Plan
Ferdinand. CL all-sheet biplane model for .049 power.
Quote: "A simple all sheet 15 inch span biplane for .049 (8cc) engines. All sheet construction with modern lines and inexpensive to construct, ideal for GW members. Ferdinand, by I Barrett.
THE ADVENT of the small glow-motor, especially those used to power the plastic ready-to-fly model, has meant that many youngsters find themselves with an engine and no model in which to put it - because plastic ones do not last forever! Here's an inexpensive and efficient replacement airframe!
Ferdinand, an out of the rut small biplane control-line model, was published in the September 1959 Aeromodeller. This, the first Ferdinand, has now been re-designed for the .049 glow-motor, and now has a more rakish appearance but still retains its original name.
Construction is simple, and the material requirements small, Starting with the engine bulkhead, sandwich the undercarriage between the ply/balsa/ply former, and bolt on the engine. Cement on the fuselage sides, adding formers A and B. Make the tailplane and elevator assembly and cement to the rear of the fuselage sides.
Cut the wings from 1/8 in sheet balsa, and sand to the correct section, Insert the ply stiffener in the lower wing, and make the bcllcrank assembly. Couple the pushrod to belicrank and elevator, and cement the lower wing to the underside of the fuselage.
Add the top wing and interplane struts, and sheet the top and bottom of the fuselage. Cut out the fin and sand to section, but before cementing to the fuselage, smear the starboard side with cement and allow to dry. When the cement has dried, its contraction will have curved the fin, so giving the required offset..."
Quote: "Some time ago, I found this plan in Internet. I've looked at your web page, but you only have the first version of this design (published in September 1959). So I have decided to send you one copy of the 1967 version plan in PDF, the article text, as well as one vectorized redraw in CAD and PDF format. The original design by I Barret was published in the Aeromodeller issue of January 1967."

Hey Oz, after many years out of the hobby, I downloaded the Ferdinand plans and built it from scratch [main pic, 003, 004]. The plans printed out just a little bit big, so I pushed the firewall forward to make sure the prop had the right clearance. Other than that, built it straight of the plans.Nathaniel Seavy - 28/06/2021

Notes
* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
