About this Plan

Duo Monoplane. Free flight model for Jetex 50 power.

Quote: "Bill Dean presents an unexpensive all-sheet novelty for Jetex 50. The Duo-Monoplane.

GLANCING through the pages of a recent American aviation magazine, we came across an interesting article on Duo-Monoplanes - those unusual aircraft that are something like a DeBolt Bipe, minus the tailplane! We had never seen a model based on the Dual-Mono layout, so the decision was made to build a Jetex 50 powered version and see if they really worked.

All-sheet construction was chosen for simplicity and the Jetex unit was shifted along the fuselage until the glide had been perfected. No alterations to the incidence settings were necessary and the model performed just as well as other more conventional designs that we had previously built. We were pleased to find that if the model happened to be climbing vertically when the charge expired, the stall recovery was remarkably good. Building time should not be more than two hours, so you need only set aside a short evening for this 15 in span Jetex model.

Construction. The plans on the adjoining page are given full size, so the patterns may be transferred directly onto the balsa sheet by means of carbon paper. Choose light, strong 1/16 in sheet for the flying surfaces and medium 1/8 in for the fuselage. Taper the leading and trailing edges of the wings (on top) and join the panels at the indicated dihedral angles - pinning the left hand panels fat on the building board and cementing the right ones to them (propping up the latter with books). Notch the fins on to the rear wing and check that they are quite vertical..."

as i remember this was a design only on paper by Peyret inspired by Mignet‘s flying flea. i stumbled over some info at secret projects forum.

This really isn't a scale model, it's just a simple profile shape to fix a Jetex 50 onto. But if we really do have to imagine/choose some real-world inspiration for it, I'd say the Pou is a bad choice as it only had one central tail fin. A better choice would be the Arsenal Delanne 10 surely. Or even the Lysander P12?

Just looking through the text here, Bill Dean says he was reading a recent American article on Duo-Monoplanes. I'd take a wild guess that it was this one from Air Trails, Oct 1950: https://www.airplanesandrockets.com/magazines/air-trails/delanne-duo-monoplanes-air-trails-october-1950.htm ...that article includes a nice artist's impression of a modern (modern for 1950, that is) jet fighter with the Delanne layout, and twin fins.

The Miles M35 comes to mind, as well, see: Miles M35 Libellula (oz13432)

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
