Magee Challenger (oz3585)
About this Plan
Magee Challenger. Free flight fantasy scale model. Seems to be a parasol version of the Curtiss Jenny.
Quote: "A lesser known auracrft from Aeronuttycal history, 23 in span for CO2 engines, designed by Peter Miller
The model is designed for the GM 120 CO2 motor and is as accurate to scale as possible, bearing in mind the non-existent documentation.
Construction is quite simple with no really tricky bits. Keep the fuselage light as the nose is rather short - I had to add some lead in the cowling.
Fuselage. The fuselage is built in the normal way, two sides built over the plan. Note that the centre section struts are built into the fuselage sides. Cut them to length accurately as this governs the location of the top wing. Once the sides have been lifted from the plan, add the 1/16 in square doublers to the inside of the top longerons. The sides are Joined with F-3a and F-5a. All the top deck formers are the same, except F-6 which has the stringer slots cut into it.
Fit the firewall, which is the motor mounting former.The model needs lots of right side thrust and this, together with the down thrust, is shown on the plan. Fit the motor and tank at this stage and then fit the stringers and top deck.The 1/32in sheet must be very flexible and trimmed round the struts.
The undercarriage legs are bound and glued to 1/8in square which is glued into place, then the legs are soldered to the axles.
Wings. These should need no description - just make sure that the root ribs are exactly located to allow the centre section struts to slide up inside them. When the struts are flush with the top of the ribs the wing is at the correct incidence.The tail surfaces are just built over the plan as shown..."

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
