About this Plan

Gaisgeach. A 52in Span C/L stunt model incorporating modern flap elevator linkage, which is detailed in an accompanying article and also the build article. Model Aircraft January 1960.

Quote: "To use full-size terms, the Operational Requirement for Gaisgeach was simple and exciting - build the best stunter I could for the Oliver Tiger, regardless of trouble, size, cost or complexity.

The initial design was very highbrow. It came from a structural and aerodynamic study, combined with a mathematical analysis of several successful models, including the Nobler, Ruffy, Smoothie and Thunderbird. Every refinement I could think of was incorporated, slotted flaps and elevators, torsion sprung undercarriage, precision control gear, special removable tank, lifting-section fin and so on.

Surprisingly, all this worked from the start and now, after two seasons development, is extremely efficient anfd reliable.

During the development period three 2.5's, a 3.5 special and a new MAX-35 have been tried, as well as some 20 propellers, six tanks, three tail-moment arms, three tailplanes and two each of undercarriages, fins and cowls.

The first models weighed 22 oz with the Tiger and 27 oz with the OS. My favourite is the 35 oz Mark 2A which is fair competition for anything in any weather. It uses the Tiger-based 3.5 special, but will fly a line schedule with the standard Oliver, The accompanying plan is of the Mark 4, a derivative of the 2A, but for the Tiger and incorporating all the latest modifications. It should weigh about 28 oz.

Power is marginal with anything short of a competition FAI diesel, and while a two-speed 35 gives a perfectly stable, controllable and exhilarating Bight, so much power is not needed.

Construction. This is unusual enough to be interesting but not difficult, and is only a few shillings more expensive than the cheapest possible job. The wing-spar in particular looks a fearsome task, because the front lead-in wires pass through it. However, this is the simplest of all built up spars..."

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
