Yardstick is a simply constructed, practical Nordic glider. It is very rugged, tows well and is a remarkable, stable thermal seeker.
Admittedly ugly by comparison with the long, sleek, very high aspect Nordics, this model will last through a season of rugged Mid-Western contest flying, where thermals are potent (and downdrafts too) and winds are usually high. A thin winged, beautiful Nordic probably will show up better during extremely calm conditions, but lets be practical - how many contests are there with such perfect weather?
This design is working on its fourth contest season now. Its predecessors have put nine trophies on our shelves. We are impressed with its towing ease and ability to be led into a thermal. The straight dihedral, moderate undercamber, short moment and shorter-than-average nose length give good recovery from a bad launch or flight into unstable air.
Start construction by sawing out the plywood or pine main fuselage part. Shape can vary but be accurate in sawing the wing tongue slot and in drilling the holes for the sliding two hook bolts. Saw out or drill lightening holes as shown. Counter sink holes for the flat head bolts which hold the tongue in place, and mount 4-40 blind mounting nuts on the right side of the fuselage which will bolt the adjustable tow hook in place.
This structure is the whole center of the model, so do a good job. Now lay it in place on the plans and lay out the rest of the fuselage side view with hard top and bottom and soft uprights. The rear section is filled with soft balsa, which will allow some 'meat' for sanding the rear taper.
While the fuselage is drying, saw out the wing tongue. We prefer 3/32 aluminum tongues, but have used and like laminated tongues, cemented from three strips of 1/32 plywood in a form. In this operation use a form with the correct dihedral and clamp each lamination in it after a light soaking in warm water. Then place it in the oven and bake an hour or so at low temperature. Remove, and using Wilhold or another good white glue, cement the three layers together and re-clamp until thoroughly dry..."

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
