About this Plan

Veron Combi-Kit Classic Glider. Free flight glider model.

Quote: "For this model you need two sheets of parts, and you have to admire the way they have been adapted for this design and sometimes used for purposes other than intended (for example, using wing ribs as wingtips). By all accounts it makes a good calm weather flyer - the wing looks a little weak to be towing it up in a stiff breeze though."

Update 04/07/2013: Added scan of original kit printwood, thanks to vintage1.

Update 15/3/2025: Added kit instructions, thanks to MikeJones.

Quote: "The Classic Glider. Building instructions: This COMBI-KIT 'CLASSIC' GLIDER is the essence of simplicity and makes an ideal beginners model, giving initial experience in construction and assembly. You need only a good Balsa Knife, 'HUMBROL' cement, modelling pins, waxed tissue and garnet paper. A tube of 'HUMBROL' Tissue Paste, small jar of 'HUMBROL' Clear Shrinking Dope, also Thinners and soft brush will complete your requirements.

Study the plan carefully and identify all the parts on the die-cut sheets of balsa. Familiarise yourself with the sequence and method of construction as detailed in these instructions and the pictorial diagrams. Cover the plan with waxed or grease-proof tissue and pin both to a building board.

FUSELAGE: Select even grades of strip 3/32 x 3/32 (2.5 x 2.5 mm) for the longerons. Pin in place over plan, double laminating lower longerons, joining where indicated. Place pins either side of longerons, not through. Cut all uprights in pairs, the second set for the second side. Allow to set before raising first side from board. Similarly construct second identical side. See Diagram B.

Construct basic former of 3/32 x 3/16 (2.5 5 mm) over plan. See plan and diagram A. Cement former squarely to one side as in diagram C.

Join two sides about basic former as in diagram D. Cut crosspieces in pairs. Chamfer rear end of longerons and draw together, binding with cotton to secure. Insert cross-pieces top and bottom, working from front to rear. Check for squareness and warps.

Erect in place all formers as indicated. Former F at front of cockpit is set to angle governed by sides L. Rearmost E has its' lower edge trimmed by 1/16 (1.5 mm). Former 0 is cut in half, shortened and rejoined as in sketch. Add top stringers but not wing supports, until after covering. Trim upper edges of L to make cockpit. Add noseblock and when set, carve and sand to shape. Drill ballast hole. Add lower runner after covering.

WINGS: Angled trailing edges of outer wing panels are cut from one length of 3/32 x 1/4 (2.5 x 6.25 mm), scarf jointed and laid in place plan. Mark and cut out 1/16 (1.5 mm) deep slots for ribs.

Inner panel trailing edges are cut from one piece of 3/32 x 1/4 (2.5 x 6.25 mm), similarly notched. Pin all in place over plan above waxed tissue. Also pin in place, leading edges and spars of 3/32 x 3/16 (2.5 x 5 mm), butt jointing, but not glueing, where indicated at outer dihedral break.

Cement all ribs in place, leaning base rib R.1 to allow for dihedral. Cement dihedral gusset J to one side only. Add rib R.4 set flat for tip. Only one set of R.3 are used... "

Hey Steve, I built this model this summer after downloading the plans from Outerzone [see more pics 004]. The Classic flies moderately well, and I am in the process of adjusting the CG for maximum performance. I built the model as per the plans; however, I built it with a reinforced two-piece wing, and modified it for micro RC equipment. Being short on covering materials, my model is covered with yellow Monokote, and white Silkspan. When finished, I achieved approximately a 6.5:1 glide ratio. I love your site. Keep up the good work,

In the past year I have scratch built many models from plans on your website. See Veron Classic photos attached [more pics 005-007].

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
