Thunderstreak (oz3230) 1960 - plan thumbnail

About this Plan

AF Thunderstreak. Australian control line high performance stunt model. For 3.5 - 6.0cc engines.

Direct submission to Outerzone.

Update 29/12/2021: Replaced this plan with a clearer copy (also added printwood scans), thanks to JedBond.

Quote: "Hi Steve and Mary, I recently picked up an original Aeroflyte Thunderstreak kit, and have had the plans scanned. This original has the build instructions included and hasn't been cropped like the current version on OZ. I have also included photocopies of the original print wood, wing ribs, and fly fuselage formers. Have a Merry and Safe Christmas, and all the best for the New Year. Keep up the great work, it is appreciated. Cheers,"

Quote: "Building Instructions: Before starting to build your Thunderstreak study the plan carefully until all stages of construction are fully understood.

STEP 1. Carefully cut out all parts from the printed sheets and then mount the ready formed undercarriage onto former F3, using the three (3) split pins supplied. (Diags 6 & 9) Drill the two engine bearers to suit your engine and bolt the engine into place, soldering a piece of wire across the heads of the bolts as shown in diagram 1. Cement formers F2 and. F3 to the engine bearers and put aside until dry.

Mark out the position of the wing on the two fuselage sides and cement these to the engine mount assembly. Hold together with rubber bands and cement formers F1a, F4, F5, F6 and F7 into place.

STEP 2. Build the two wing halves using the following method for both: Mark off all rib positions on the bottom 3/8 x 1/4 main spar and pin the ribs into place on this spar. Next add the top main spar, the leading edge and the bottom 1 in x 1/16 trailing edge then firmly cement all joints. Cement the top 1/16 sheet trailing edge and the leading edge sheeting (top and bottom) to the wing frame and set aside to dry. Join the two wings, fitting the control plate mount at the same time, using the 3/8 x 1/4 wing braces and shaped trailing edge brace, then cement the wing tips and wing tip gussets in place.

Bolt the control plate to the control plate mount using the 1/8 nuts, bolts and washers supplied and then fit the lead out wire and copper tubing as shown. Now slide the wing through the fuselage and hold in place with a few drops of cement. (Diag 3) Sandpaper the tailplane and elevators to a streamlined section and attach the elevators to the tailplane with tape hinges. (Diag 10) Bend up the wire elevator horn (Diag. 8) and bind and cement this to the elevators.

Allow to dry and cement the tailplane into place at the rear of the fuselage (Diag 4).

STEP 3. Attach the wing flaps to the wing with tape hinges, bend up the flap control horn (Diag 7) and cement and bind it to the flaps. Bend the two pushrods to shape and fit them between the elevator horn and control plate as shown in diagram 2, so that when the control plate is held in the neutral position both the flaps and elevators are also neutral.

STEP 4. Complete the sheet covering of the centre section and double cement the wing to fuselage joint. Next fit the top 7/8 x 3/8 fuselage back spar, the top 1/8 sides, the 1/4 x 1/4 bottom fuselage strengtheners, and the fuel tank.

Complete the fuselage by fitting the bottom sheeting, top and bottom nose blocks, fin, rudder, canopy, tailskid and former F1.

STEP 5. Double cement all joints taking special care over the wing fuselage joint as a lot of strain is put on this when the model is flying. Cement the wing tip weight onto the outboard tip and fit the wheels to the undercarriage axle.

STEP 6. Sandpaper the entire airframe to a smooth finish all over and cover in tissue or silk, whichever you desire. Give the entire model at least three coats of Aero-Flyte Dope and finish in the colours your desire with fuelproof paint.

Your Thunderstreak has been designed by a group of the worlds leading stunt flyers and is capable of all known stunt manoeuvres when powered by any good 5 to 6 cc engine. If built exactly as shown on the plan your model will be one of the greatest stunt planes ever flown. "

Hi Mary, I have taken to building some Control line models as a result of being home during Covid lockdowns etc and built this Thunderstreak last year [main pic, 008, 009]. You have the Thundersteak in your plans and I see you already have some examples but if any of these are useful you can use them. My first motor was a Frog 500 and I intended to build a Thunderstreak for it but never did when I was a teenager but now 60 years later I have, and it flies well even if a little underpowered for overhead manoeuvres.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
