Mercurian Mite (oz2885)
About this Plan
Mercurian Mite. Control line flying saucer model. For .5 engines.
Quote: "Contruction is so simple as to make written instructions superfluous, but appended herewith regardless of expense are a few flying tips and a word on the tank. By the way the original Mercurian Mite has not been flown with a Dart 5, but if any aeromod mounts one of these delicious little bundles of power up front, they may find they've got a very lively customer on the end of the lines!
The fule tank is cut from the end of a TEK toothbrush container, with a piece of the container cemented over the open end, and holes drilled for the feed pipe and filler opening. Roughen all surfaces to be cemented with sandpaper. The thin aluminium tank-retaining band was cut from a flattened out old type Jetex fuse container and finally please see your model balances correctly.
Flying: Make up 15 ft thread lines, and before launching see that your engine (whichever 'point-five' you are using) is revving really well. Get a friend to hand-launch the saucer. Give it a firm push-off, but pleaser don't hurl it. The glide cannot be described as a floating one, so keep your saucer fairly low when you sense the engine is going to cut..."

This 3mm Depron foam version of the Mercurian Mite [pics 004-007] was our first attempt at indoor C/L in 2011. Initially, we used a Parkzone "Vapor" type Rx/esc/servo module to control the gearmotor. The pit crew simply applied full throttle with the Tx, launched the model (first photo), and waited for verbal instructions from the pilot. This method worked very well, but seemed like "cheating" somehow, so the Rx module was replaced with a C/L timer and ESC (second photo). The model is surprisingly easy to fly, and many clubmates had a chance to try it. However, the lack of U/C ensures that every "landing" is basically a rollover crash - and the hardwood floor took it's toll on the motor mount, prop shafts, and propellers. From this time onward, all our indoor C/L models would have a proper undercarriage! Flying photos by Peter Smith.ChrisMoes - 19/11/2020

Notes
* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
