Vought F8U-1 Crusader. Scale control line IC ducted fan model of the Navy jet fighter. Wingspan 27 in, length 33.75 in, for 1/2A engines. Scale is 1/16. Kit no 4-17.

User commentsfrom Pit's attic: I remember my father building this model when I was 5-6 y.o. around 1969 [main pic, 004-010]. He built it from the original plan and probably reduced balsa width of the pieces. He decided for single channel with his own made radio control utilizing Graupner Bellamatic not proportional servos. Probably due to the radio system weight abandoned the project unflown. Believe it or not the model weight is only 370 gr, 54 years of dust enclosed!
I'm thinking to give it a second chance with modern brushless motor and micro servos.

The impeller looks a lot like the ones that Phil Smith in England did with some of the Veron model jets. I've seen a couple of them fly at Middle Wallop. They were originally powered by Cox 049s on high nitro (although I assume the Brits used diesels). With a modern brushless powered ducted fan, this Crusader should fly a treat.

Strangely enough the word 'Veron' on the box seems to confirm this.

My father built the model from Berkeley plan, not directly from the kit that had a five bladed aluminium impeller (see advertising), Veron impellers was the "top" at the time for ducted fan models and available in Italy, more efficient than the original that was retained dangerous too. Note the pinned fan blade to avoid their distact due to centrifugal force. (see instruction, mine Mod.B) The engine bearer are spaced for Cox Tee Dee 051 the most powerful 1/2 Half engine of the world until the arrival of the Russian Norvel 0.8.

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
