About this Plan

Smoky. Free flight power model by Paul Plecan. 55in span old timer. Uses curious multiple dihedral breaks at the wing tips, to form a strangely modern looking curved wingtip (puts me in mind of the Multiplex Easystar, about 50 years later).

Quote: "Here's a gas model with a few new 'wrinkles.' Not so hot on looks, but this baby really performs. And here are some of the reasons why. Using six dihedral breaks at the tips, we obtain the desired dihedral effect for stability. This leaves most of the wing perfectly flat, which allows the maximum lift per unit of wing area. As a result, the glide is really phenomenal, The one drawback is a tendency to hang on its prop - due to the high pylon and resultant high center of drag. So, if you contemplate building this model you might want to lower the wing approxirnately 1-1/2 in.

The compact ignition assembly is another feature of this model. The battery box is built into the cowl directly under the engine and, since the coil and timer are mounted directly behind the firewall, all the wire leads are short, contributing greatly to the electrical efficiency. And note that, by using double wing spars, we utilize a thin wing section similar to the NACA 6409, yet strong enough to take the most violent maneuvers in stride (providing that hard balsa is used for spars, chum). Construction is really simple, so, if you like the design, grab that razor blade and let's go.

The fuselage crutch is built first of 3/16 x 1/2 in medium balsa as per the plans. Without waiting for the cement to dry, add the upper portion of the fuselage. The top stringer of 1/4 x 1/2 in balsa should be soft, as the sizes of wood are generous; the fuselage is plenty strong as it. The front or the fuselage can extend over the edge of the workbench to allow insertion of the complete firewall..."

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
