About this Plan

Cicada. Free flight gas model for Cox Pee Wee .02 power. From American Modeler December 1959.

Quote: "In an endeavor to build a free flight sport model employing simple construction methods yet differing from orthodox designs, I decided to experiment with the tiny Cox Pee Wee as the powerplant.

The good flying quality which the model later displayed came as a pleasant surprise. From the first glance at the pictures, one may perhaps think the model which I named Cicada - a cute summer insect in the Orient - is an amphibian. My prototype, however, is made for flying over land only. But with minor modifications to the fuselage bottom, I believe the model could be adapted for Rise-Off-Water flying too. Also, the spacious fuselage will certainly make the plane a possibility for the increasing popular 'Quarter-A' R/C flying category.

The specifications of Cicada are: wingspan 28-1/2 in, wing area 126 sq inches, weight 5.9 ounces, total length 20 in, stabilizer area 38 sq. inches (30% wing), wing loading 6.75 ounces/sq foot.

As the construction of the model is fairly obvious, I feel further details would be superfluous. As can be seen from the pictures, the building material is of a minimum order and I am certain that the model can be constructed from any modeler's scrap balsa pile..."

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
