Super Phoenix (oz2080)
About this Plan
Super Phoenix. Free flight gas pylon model. January 1949 Air Trails. Arden .199 engine shown.
Quote: "This is the Super Phoenix, now a favorite with a number of modelers. The general design has been used by many top notch flyers for an impressive list of contest wins.
This differs from earlier experimental designs in many respects, and especially by having the wing raised to keep the center of resistance high.The new wing section is thinned out and is flat on the bottom. The climb has been increased considerably as those who have seen this model perform at Eastern meets will attest. The glide has been bettered to the point where I consider it nearly perfect.
Among the engines you can power this ship with are the Arden, McCoy, Ohlsson, K&13 and Veco.
The model is quite easy to build. There are no tricky parts to give trouble. Flying is equally simple. Using a glow plug engine, the ship is trimmed for a flat glide - not a diving glide - but rather with a suggestion of a slight stall. Then, by offsetting the tail plug you give enough left rudder to kill the initial stall. With this adjustment the plane will not spin in under power but instead will roll up and avert what might otherwise be - on infrequent occasions - a crack-up.
There are no offset thrust adjustments. All that is required is that the model glide to the left. This is best checked from the side of a hill. The thrust will take it up to the right. The ship flies so fast that at the end of the power run it will level out in much the same manner as a hand-launched glider. With this method there is no altitude lost and when the motor run ends the model will be really up there and on its own.
Regarding flying - about all that need be said is to have the model gliding well. Add weight to get the proper glide. If you hesitate to fly your model with engine wide open on first tests and are unable to get the engine to run slow, add a little oil to the fuel mixture and use a large prop. This will slow down your job sufficiently during adjustment period."

Notes
* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
