Luton Minor (oz2068)
About this Plan
Luton Minor. Scale parasol British model for 1 or 2 channel radio control and Cox Tee Dee .020 power. Flyline kit # 112.
Quote: "INSTRUCTIONS: Build two basic fuselage sides as shown on side view of plan. Join sides using cross member lengths as shown on top view. Bend wire for wing center section struts and bind to plywood formers 2 and 4 as shown. Install formers, stringers, and sheet covering forward of former 4. Add landing gear struts and 3/16 alu. tube to retain wing struts.
Construct wing, elevator, and rudder in conventional manner. Laminated tips are made by softening balsa strips in boiling water and bending around form made of cardboard. Suggest water base glue be used for this purpose.
Build the wing struts and nose from strip and block balsa provided and mount the selected radio control unit as suggested on the drawings.
Model should be covered with wet silkspan or Jap tissue and finished with three coats of clear dope, color dope as desired. Registration letters may either be painted on the fuselage and wing or cut from black tissue and doped on as appropriate.
Testing should be conducted in the normal manner after insuring proper balance and trim. On the single channel version down and side thrust may be needed and should be added with washers or shims behind engine mount, as needed.

ScaleType: This (oz2068) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.
If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.
Notes:
ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luton_Minor
Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

I am 80 years old and have been building model aircraft for at least 70 years . . . I have never come across a kit that with a plan that is so impossible to build. Hurst Bowers may have built a model of the Luton Minor that flys - but not from the kit plan. The plan looks good in 2D but when you try to build it in real life the plan has so many drawing errors that it cannot be followed. To build my model most of the structure had to be drastically modified. The plans must have been drawn from the past memory of building a Luton Minor, the kit is unbuildable. Such a disappointment when the box looked so good.Ian Laing - 09/08/2021
Interesting. Has anyone else out there built this kit?
SteveWMD - 09/08/2021
Yes I built the Luton Minor, admittedly not from the kit but the kit plan. I came across no problems whatsoever, and the model has flown very successfully under radio control. I’m not quite 80 but will be in less than two years and at present I’m building more models from your plans, so once again, thank you for your excellent service. I’ve attached a few photos of my model, included is the Dart Kitten from a David Boddington free plan I believe, it was during 1997. Both of these models have flown very successfully in Australian Old Timer Scale events.

Thanks John. Nice work, and I love the barebones pic [005]. Ok, so Ian, what exactly was the problem with your build? You didn't give any details apart from saying the kit is unbuildable.
SteveWMD - 09/08/2021
I'm guessing the Dart Kitten plan in question was the Dart Kitten II (oz2682) a design by David Larkin, which was mistakenly credited to Boddo by the printers, back in 1993. That plan in turn is actually a scaled-up version of the 1950 John Lamble plan see Dart Kitten (oz1635).

Hi Steve, Hi Mary. Yes, that is the one, I do remember now that the wrong designer (David Boddington) was given credit for someone else’s design. Bad form what! That model too was a delightful build, and I believe it is still flying in Old Timer scale events up in Queensland, which is where we were living at the time of building it. Once again, thank you both for the work that you do in keeping our wonderful hobby more alive than ever.

Notes
* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
