BE2 (oz17003)
About this Plan
BE2. Control line control sport-scale biplane model. Wngspan 1110 mm.
Quote (google-translated): "Control-Line Model BE 2. Designed by Claus Maikis.
Claus Maikis, the 'artist' of the control-line flying scene, does not build his models solely for the purpose of flying; they must also possess beautiful lines and paintwork, qualities for which his aircraft are renowned and instantly recognizable at any competition. Understandably, he rarely builds 'semi-scale' models, as the scope for creative freedom is quite limited in that category.
Our plan-built model, the BE 2, is perhaps more of a free design than a strict scale replica. Nevertheless, the model incorporates the characteristic features of the original; thus, this design by Claus Maikis not only rightfully bears the name "BE 2" but also deservedly won third prize in our plan-building competition within the semi-scale class.
Back when aircraft were built from wooden strips, covered in fabric, and braced with wires, the world seemed right. At least that is what we believe, which is precisely why vintage aircraft hold such a special fascination. What model flyer hasn't dreamed of an old biplane? I fulfilled that dream with the BE 2.
Since I have never been a fan of scale models, a strictly true-to-life replica was out of the question. The idea was to create an aerobatic model that conveyed the visual impression of a vintage biplane. Certain proportions (e.g., nose-to-tail ratio, wing area vs. tailplane area, fuselage cross-section vs. length) needed to be maintained; the Royal Aircraft Factory BE 2 seemed well-suited for this approach.
I adopted the characteristic elements of the original. Just as a caricature does not rely on precise scale accuracy, I placed no importance on exact dimensions. I use a focus on characteristic features - and sometimes the exaggeration of them - as a key method to achieve my goal. Furthermore, many details - even those that are simple to fabricate - had to be omitted to reduce air resistance. Not to mention weight, the aerobatic pilot's worst enemy. The construction was kept as simple as possible, even if it meant making compromises regarding appearance.
The model is very easy to build, although it does require a bit more time. On the other hand, the effort involved in building the wings is minimal (I can build these two wings faster than a single conventional aerobatic wing with internal control linkages). Since aerobatic performance was a requirement, an appropriate airfoil had to be used (scale enthusiasts, please look away).
The intended size of the model called for at least a robust 6.5cc engine; a larger displacement certainly wouldn't hurt, either. The design was developed based on these criteria. I will refrain from commenting on the aerodynamics. With an aircraft like this... well, let's just say the less said, the better. After all, the BE 2 can perform all the maneuvers listed in the 'Code Sportif' - and a few that aren't!
I usually begin construction with the wings. To do this, I get a second building board and build both wings simultaneously. After all the ribs have been cut as a block..."

ScaleType: This (oz17003) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.
If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.
Notes:
ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Aircraft_Factory_B.E.2
Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

Yes, the airfoil does mar the scale appearance a little.bill dennis - 16/09/2026

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
