About this Plan

Testors Baby TC-2. Control line profile trainer model. Wingspan 18 in.

Quote: "Testor's Baby TC-2 is an accurately scaled-down version of Testor's popular TC-2 Trainer. It has been carefully engineered to meet the requirements of the beginner, and serves the purpose of initiating the novice into the exciting control-line model airplane hobby. It is designed for use with the new, inexpensive, very small bore, glow-plug type engines and is also suitable for use with carbon dioxide type engines. Follow these detailed instructions, and if there is some point you don't understand thoroughly, consult your local hobby dealer or ask a member of the model airplane club in your neighborhood. Either will be glad to give information which will help clarify your problem.

The advanced modeler will find the BABY TC-2 suitable for use with glow-plug type engines of .099 cu in displacement. However, the model is much faster and quicker on the controls with this size engine and it is not recommended that the novice use this combination until after he is thoroughly familiar with flying the ship with the smaller engines, (approximately .020 cu in). Use an 8-D x 6-P Testor propeller with .099 engines, and a 5-1/2-D x 3-P Testor propeller on .020 engines..

STEP No.1: If you don't have a sanding block, make one from a block of wood approximately 6 x 2 x 1 inch, as shown. It is best to wrap the sandpaper around the block and secure it with thumb tacks. This makes it easy to replace the sandpaper when it becomes worn. Use number 1/2 sandpaper for rough shaping operations, and number 3/0 for smooth shaping. The sanding block is used to round the fuselage, shape the tips and front edge of the wing, and round the edges of the rudder and elevator parts. Remember to sand with the grain of the wood during every sanding operation.

STEP No.2: Sand the top of the fuselage (from the cabin back) to a round cross-section as illustrated. Leave flat the part where the wing and engine mounts join the fuselage. The bottom can remain square but sand the edges slightly. Hand sand the en-tire fuselage with 4/0 sandpaper. Hand sanding is done with the sandpaper held between the thumb and fingers.

STEP No.3: Sand the wing front edge and tips round; taper the rear edge down to about 1/32 thickness. The wing cross section, is shown on the drawing, although the exact section is not critical. Hand sand the entire wing with 4/0 paper.

STEP No.4: Round the edges of the rudder, elevator, and stabilizer. The edges where the elevator joins the stabilizer may be left square. Hand sand the tail surfaces with 4/0 sandpaper. Using TESTOR'S Formula B Cement, apply the control horn on the elevator 3/8" to the right of the center (looking to the rear of the plane). Use cement liberally, coating the joint a second time after the first application dries. Cut eight 3/4" cloth hinges from the long strip of cloth supplied in the kit. Cement these in place as shown in the illustration below. Join the elevator and stabilizer by cementing the top elevator hinge cloth to the under side of the stabilizer and vice versa.

STEP No.5: Sand the engine mounts with 3/0 or 4/0 sand-paper. Slip the wire landing gear into place on the fuselage, and then cement the engine mounts into place. Make sure the mounts are flush with the top of the fuselage. After inserting the wing in the ready-cut notch, you will find that the landing gear wire is no longer free to move up and down. Do not cement the wing in yet. REMEMBER: this assembly carries the weight and vibration of your engine, so care should be taken to make it tight and strong. Use cement liberally.

Step No.6: Cut the rudder tab from the rudder as shown on the drawing (side view). Cement the tab into place at 1/8 in offset as shown here. It is necessary to do this so that the plane will circle away in Flight and thus keep the control lines tight. Now cement the rudder into the slot on top of the fuselage. Make sure that it is straight up and down. Refer to the drawing side view for the correct location and position of the rudder... "

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
