I have long had considerable interest in 1/2A size planes to be used for practicing Combat. As many people have stated in other articles, in order to get sharp and mai-tain your skills, actual combat matches with an opponent are essential. If all practice is performed with FAI sized planes, the natural attrition rate will make the cost prohibitive both in building time and expenditures. If 1/2A planes are used, particularly over tall grass, the costs become negligible.

When I started flying a full-size Nemesis, the idea occurred to me to reduce the design to 1/2A size for practice purposes. The plane presented here is the result of that reduction process. With a good Tee Dee on pressure and 35 ft .008 lines, the rotational speed around the circle as well as the maneuverability are quite similar to the original design.

There are two important ideas to remember during the reduction process. The first is locating the CG, and the second is determining the relationship of the leadouts to the CG. The CG primarily determines the plane's sensitivity to control movement.

When you scale down a combat plane such as the Nemesis and attach a Tee Dee or Medallion .049, the plane is inclined to be tail heavy. This means hypersensitivity to control. If a tank mounted .049 such as a Black Widow or Golden Bee is used, the plane will be nose heavy and sluggish. A happy balance between these two extremes must be reached by careful attention to construction weights and ballasting if necessary. The CG's relationship to the leadouts is the main contributing factor in line tension, not the bellcrank pivot point as you might think.

Because of weight differences, center of mass, speed, line length and size changes, the leadout positions from the full-size plane will seldom function as well on the smaller plane as on its prototype..."
