The Fanliner also features a quite futuristic design; the renowned designer Luigi Colani collaborated on the project and was able to realize his ideas - though these were by no means the only concepts he proposed to aircraft designers, most of which failed to gain traction.

Unfortunately, a rather conservative mindset prevails in the light aircraft industry - with the exception of gliders - among both manufacturers and buyers. How else can one explain the fact that, in the automotive world, a ten-year-old model is considered hopelessly outdated today, whereas most light aircraft are based on concepts that are 30 to 40 years old- regarding aerodynamic design, construction methods, and even propulsion?

Perhaps the Fanliner was simply too modern. It did not progress beyond the prototype stage and did not go into production. We hope however that this unique aircraft won't remain a one-off and that our plans will inspire the creation of further Fanliners -albeit on a much smaller scale.

Oliver Wennmacher designed the model, which also won an award in our design competition.
